Its name comes from a plant commonly known as Sagittaria, tuber plant normally found in water. The root of this plant is edible, and even Katniss does in the first book. The name also means "belonging to an arrow" in Latin, which may have a connection with the ability to have Katniss with bow and arrow.
beginning:
Katniss and her family live in the country called Panem futuristic, located in what was once North America, which was destroyed in a global war. Panem is ruled by a powerful city called the Capitol, located in the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by 13 districts (the 13th district is revealed in Catching Fire and Mockingjay), each with a specific purpose.
The story begins in District 12, where Katniss, the poorest district of all, in charge of coal mining lives. Katniss lives with her mother and sister Primrose, in the poorest area of the district, called La Veta.
Katniss's father, who was a miner, died in an explosion at the mine when she was 11. After her husband died, Katniss's mother fell into a deep depression and was unable to take care of their daughters. On the verge of starvation, Katniss went to the richest part of the district, hoping to pick up some food from the dustbins of traders. The son of a baker, Peeta, whom she did not know, was beaten by his mother, after burning some bread to give to Katniss.
Katniss took two loaves to his mother and sister, who had not eaten in days. The bread gave them hoping to get ahead, and since then Katniss always felt indebted to Peeta. A few days after the incident with the bread, Katniss walked into the woods surrounding District 12 to hunt illegally and collect some plants to feed, just as his father took food home before dying. In forests, Katniss met Gale, who became his hunting partner, and the two began to feed their families together. Slowly, Katniss's mother left her depressed and started working again as apothecary, to bring some money home.
